Our generation has changed the status quo quite a bit, but the media has not followed suit, unfortunately. This is especially evident in the area where you live, because there are many down-to-earth people who believe in "new age" style concepts such as this. It's one thing I'm incredibly proud of m generation for.Beckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15100023167123234673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781813554327215280.post-70471027183991539152014-09-18T05:58:46.236-07:002014-09-18T05:58:46.236-07:00Honestly I didn't know about the Bechdel Test ...Honestly I didn't know about the Bechdel Test until recently. And now I'm going to base my judgement of (almost) any movie I see on this test. (I say "almost" because movies based on books cannot be judged by the same criteria; you need to assess the book itself, especially the era in which it was written. Lord of the Rings is a perfect example; there are 2-3 female characters in the entire trilogy and they NEVER interact with each other. But consider when the story was written and the environment the audience was living at the time.)Beckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15100023167123234673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781813554327215280.post-89234438315597659052014-09-18T05:16:32.565-07:002014-09-18T05:16:32.565-07:00Ave, thanks for mentioning that dichotomy between ...Ave, thanks for mentioning that dichotomy between having girls and having boys. I feel the exact same way you do, which is something I struggle to put into words because it feels awkward. Probably because it is. :)

I'm not sure why it feels okay to have girls play with trains and cars and dinosaurs and cowboys and tool boxes and superheroes and at the same time feels weird to have boys play with makeup and princess dresses and Barbies and heels. I will say that I have absolutely no qualms about a boy having a doll, playing with a toy kitchen, playing dress-up, or pretending to be pregnant. I just feel a bit awkward about a boy wanting to wear princess dresses, really. And I don't know why that is...I guess it's so engrained in me that boys wear X and girls wear Y. It's an interesting and yet frustrating issue for me. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who struggles with it.Beckyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15100023167123234673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781813554327215280.post-5635181252133794872014-09-17T10:27:54.878-07:002014-09-17T10:27:54.878-07:00I found that the Bechdel test was interesting as w...I found that the Bechdel test was interesting as well. I didnt realize that how small of a role women actress play.

Also, feelings about finding women's movements in the past frustrating is something that I have thought in the past. Its like now we are expected to do everything, which I know that is what we fought for, but men do not play as big of a role (typically) in taking care of the home. It is a double edged sword.

I always enjoy your comments in class and reading your opinions where very interesting. Thank for sharing.

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03214126020957566784noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5781813554327215280.post-33051138523452535512014-09-16T20:49:15.879-07:002014-09-16T20:49:15.879-07:00I also found the Bechdel test interesting. And to ...I also found the Bechdel test interesting. And to think, the results were from this year! It reminds me of one of the quotes from the-race-card.org: "Progress? We're running in place." While women have made progress, there are so many things that still oppress in subtle ways. Your example of the sexually provocative woman not gaining respect in a courthouse is a perfect example of that.

I also share your struggle with wanting and appreciating feminism and the gains it has achieved and my own beliefs about gender. I want the choice feminism has given me to work and be independent, but I don't want to have a double work day where I have to come home to the home-maker job too.

One other thing you mentioned about how you raise your girls: would you let your boys play with dolls? Because I always say if I had girls, they could have whatever toys they wanted, but the if I had a boy ask me for a doll, I would not be comfortable with that. I'm not exactly sure what that means for me personally with regard to my beliefs about gender.

I find your perspective interesting, especially since you grew up without any of these issues having an impact on your life.

Ave AltiusAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
